Cold weather boiler issues  are usually simple to deal with. However, when winter arrives we experience a number of calls from customers who are experiencing issues with their heating. There are normally two very simple remedies that overcome most cold weather boiler issues.

Let’s understand the two main issues and how to deal with these problems.

  • Lack or reduction of Hot water:

Water entering your house can vary in temperature by up to 10 to 15 degrees from Summer to Winter.  In the winter your boiler has to work much harder to raise the hot water to the temperature you have been used to. However, it is simple to help your boiler work efficiently. Simply turn your tap/shower water flow down slightly. This will allow your boiler to heat the water work effectively and efficiently allowing you to enjoy the correct temperature of water. In conclusion, when the weather gets cold, reduce your hot water slow slightly to allow your boiler to work correctly.

  • Frozen Condensate pipe:

When the temperature drops below Zero, Condensate pipes can freeze. This pipe takes waste water from the boiler to outside the house. In cold weather the water may freeze in the pipe and stops the boiler from working.  You may get an error code or hear a gurgling from the boiler.

To resolve this, all you need to do is warm the pipe gently. For instance, you can use slightly cooled boiled water from the kettle poured over the length of the pipe if outside. Alternatively, put hot water into a bag or hot water bottle. Place it along the length of the pipe to melt.  Once warmed, press reset on the boiler and your boiler will restart.

We have put together a short video (less than 2 minutes) to show you how you can overcome these issues rather than waiting for an engineer.
